Cookies – What They are and how They Work

Cookies are something that most websites use today. A cookie is a small text file that is stored in your browser’s memory and allows us to see what you click on, how you navigate the website, and how the content on the website performs. We also collect information about navigation, time of visit, which browser you use, and so on. We do this so that we can best adapt the content on the website to you as a user. Most browsers (Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) are set to accept cookies automatically, but you can choose to change the settings so that cookies are not accepted. We point out that this may result in many websites no longer functioning as they should.

What We Use Cookies For

Google Analytics

The analytics tool Google Analytics is used to study traffic, usage patterns, and trends on the website. The data collected is used to optimize the user experience and adapt the content on the website. In accordance with Google’s guidelines for using Google Analytics, no personally identifiable information about you as a user is collected. The data collected is stored on Google’s servers. If you want to opt out of Google Analytics collecting data about you, you can request to be excluded.

Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager handles tracking codes and refers to tracking setup and tracking to third-party solutions such as Universal Analytics (Google Analytics) and is used for website optimization and marketing services. All tracking codes are run and managed via Google Tag Manager.

What is stored: Your movements and certain actions on the website (e.g., if you click “Add to cart” in an online store). All data is anonymized and we do not store any sensitive information such as: credit card information, phone number, address, or any other form of data that can identify you as a person.

Facebook Pixel

Facebook Pixel is an analytics tool that allows us to measure the effectiveness of advertising from Facebook by tracking the actions users perform on the website for optimization of Facebook Ads (building Audience and remarketing). You can use this information to:

  • Ensure that ads are shown to the right people
  • Build advertising audiences
  • Unlock additional advertising tools on Facebook

What is stored: Which ads the user has seen on Facebook, which pages the user has visited, and which conversions (orders, contact, etc.) the user has performed.

Hotjar

Maps the interaction the user has with the website. To help us understand how visitors interact with the website, Hotjar records visitor sessions. The Hotjar script is a websocket connection that sends the following information to Hotjar’s servers:

  • HTML changes that occur during the user’s session on the website
  • Mouse movements
  • Mouse clicks
  • Scroll movements
  • Keystrokes for whitelisted actions
  • Statistics on whether the browser’s viewport size changes

Each tracked event is stored in Hotjar’s cloud database using a timestamp that is later used to replay the events in sequential order. The Hotjar script tracks visitors when they visit different pages using a first-party cookie, so that the entire session can be replayed in a single recording. No sensitive information or user information is retrieved or stored.

Tracking Pixels

The tracking pixels on the website are used for tracking conversions and customized marketing. They are not container codes and do not send back personal information.
